The crowning of Miss South Jordan 2013
South Jordan has crowned its new Miss South Jordan 2013, Melody Clyde. Clyde, age 18, a graduate of Bingham High School, participated in the competition with 10 other participants. Meganne Ferel was chosen as her first attendant and Lauren Jepson, her second attendant.
The theme for the May 25 Miss South Jordan pageant was “ I Wanna Rock,” and featured Janelle Petersen, Miss South Jordan 2012, as well as special guest appearances from Kara Arnold, Miss Utah 2012, and Heather Jackman, Miss South Jordan 2000.
“My inspiration for entering the Miss South Jordan pageant was a desire to do something bigger than myself. I knew it would be fun, but I also saw the potential to make a difference,” Clyde said.
“Building Strength Despite Adversity: A Cystic Fibrosis Story” is the platform which Clyde has chosen to promote during her term as Miss South Jordan. This platform was developed through her connection to Astra Waller, a friend at Bingham High School who passed away from the disease.
Clyde was awarded a $2,500 scholarship, along with the title of Miss South Jordan 2013. The first and second attendants received $1,000 and $800 scholarships, respectively.
The contestants were judged in a number of different categories. The judges reviewed all contestants and scored them in the following categories: Lifestyle And Fitness, Expression In Talent, Interview, and Presence And Poise.
Clyde is passionate about dance, and that was the talent that she showcased during the competition. She enjoys a number of different types of dance including ballet, jazz and hip-hop. The scholarship she was awarded will help her works toward a degree in dance that she intends on receiving at Brigham Young University.
In addition to furthering her education and serving in the community, Clyde is preparing to compete in the upcoming Miss Utah competition. She said she has a long-term commitment to service and creating positive change in the community.
“Our country needs people who are proactive, not just reactive,” she said.
The other contestants that participated in the pageant are: Lexi Yraguen, Ashley Horrocks, Meganne Ferrel, Lauren Jepson, Svetlana Scott, Jessie Stevenett, Alicia Herret, Megan Marshall, Cassidy Ramsey and Kelsey Bushman.
