South Valley Compounding Pharmacy

There are certainly many pharmacies from which to choose to obtain prescription medication. From private pharmacies to pharmacies located within large grocery and retail stores, the options are almost endless. But there aren't many places in the Salt Lake Valley like South Valley Compounding Pharmacy.

At South Valley Compounding Pharmacy, 12447 South Crossing Drive (3965 West) in Herriman, you can find all traditional prescriptions, just like a regular pharmacy. But what sets the store apart from most others are specialty and hard-to-find medications.

"We do patient-specific medication," pharmacist and co-owner Bart Smith says. "We do dental medication, pediatric medications and veterinarian medications. We do topical pain management. We can order in special products and can do different dosage forms."

Sometimes, depending on the illness or needed treatment, two or more medicines have to be combined or mixed in order to get the desired medication. South Valley Compound Pharmacy has that capability.

"We do mixings, suspensions, suppositories—we even do lollipops," Bart says.

South Valley Compounding Pharmacy, which opened its doors last Nov. 3, also strives to treat its customers differently than most pharmacies; the pharmacists and technicians won't see you as just another face through the door.

"We have a hands-on service," Bart says. "We get to know our patients. Our patients are willing to bring up things with us—medical histories and reactions to medication—that they wouldn't normally bring up with other pharmacies. We talk to our patients and make sure we're meeting our needs.

Bart says the pharmacy also specializes in assisting patients that have "a higher need," or those who may currently be taking many different types of medications or who may have unique issues and concerns. All prescriptions that are filled are received from physicians.

Yet another South Valley Compounding Pharmacy feature is its delivery service. With enough notice, and based on availability, pharmacy staff will deliver prescription medications to your door. Perhaps best of all, the service is free. Also, there is a drive-up window available for drop-off and pick-up. The pharmacy also carries over-the-counter medication and has a gift shop.

The pharmacy, as well as the drive-up window, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. South Valley Compounding Pharmacy accepts most major insurances. It is staffed with two pharmacists and a technician.

"We're happy to be out here," Bart says. "We're the closet [compounding pharmacy] out here. People like that they don't have to drive too far to get specialty prescriptions. We appreciate the people."
