5th Grade Safety Awareness
Four South Jordan fifth graders received Safety Awards at a recent city council meeting for creating posters encouraging safety. The winners were selected from six area elementary schools and over 70 entries. .The contest was in association with the annual Night Out Against Crime sponsored by the South Jordan Police Department. Prizes were donated by local businesses. Posters covered topics ranging from cautioning daredevils “not to be stupid,” shunning cigarettes at school, a roadway sign warning, “Don’t Do Drugs,” and a reminder to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. “I got the idea because I saw a couple of kids without their helmets on, and I felt kind of bad about that,” said Karen Ward from Welby Elementary. This was the first year for the contest, but the South Jordan Police Department hopes to sponsor the contest again next year. “I appreciate our police department teaching our young people about safety,” Mayor Kent Money said.
