Scott Osborne is new South Jordan mayor

Economic development is key, he says

Serving in a government position is new to newly-appointed South Jordan Mayor Scott Osborne, but he believes his past experience has prepared him for his new assignment.

“Government works much like business,” Osborne said. “The principles are the same. You have to have the knowledge, then empower your employees and staff, provide assistance and hold them accountable.”

Osborne said he sees his position as enabling and directing his staff and working with other state agencies.

“I want to work closely with the city agencies, mayors of neighboring cities and state leaders,” he said.

Osborne is owner of Osborne’s Engineering Supply Co., a business that sells architectural engineering drafting products and equipment. He is also founder of software used in the golfing industry called Vision Perfect Software, Inc.

“Having worked in business helps me envision development of the city,” Osborne, a 30-year resident of South Jordan, said. “With the economic slowdown, business opportunities are a high priority and a big part of South Jordan’s economic development.”

Looking ahead, Osborn considers bringing in commercial enterprises for the city an essential part of its growth, and believes his background can help accomplish that.

“One-third of city is left to be developed, and the population is expected to grow from the current 50,000 to 105, 000,” Osborne said. “I see opportunities for a bright future for all of South Jordan’s residents.”

He mentioned Trax, Front Runner, a rehabilitation center, a new regional mall, the University of Utah medical clinic and other businesses and organizations which have either started or are considering coming to South Jordan as revenue producers for the city.

“And all these businesses leave behind money in our shops,” Osborne said.

He is undecided if he will run for mayor in the next election.

Osborne and Denice, his wife of 35 years, have four children and four grandchildren.

“Bret is a dentist and owns Osborne Dental in West Jordan. He and his wife have a daughter. Candice is a homemaker and has three children, including twin boys and one girl. Crystal is a single parent with a little girl and Bryce is in his third year of med school,” Osborne said.

Osborne is taking over the last two years of Kent Money’s position as mayor since Money will be out of the country on an assignment for the L.D.S. church during that time.
