The Public Works Department of South Jordan received the prestigious American Public Works Association Accreditation award on Jan.17 during South Jordan’s city council meeting.

“APWA accreditation is a program to enhance the effectiveness of public works agencies,”

Dwayne Kalynchuk, former president of APWA, said as he presented the award.

“South Jordan is the first municipality in Utah, and only the 76th agency in North America, to receive the APWA Accreditation.” Kalynchuk said. “The public works department has followed practices and procedures laid out in the public works manual.”

Don Bruey, director of public works for South Jordan, received the award on behalf of the city.

“We applied on March 24, 2010 for the program,” Bruey said. “The task normally takes three years, but we completed it in approximately one and a half years.”

APWA, headquartered in Kansas City, Mo, is an international, nonprofit organization involved in the field of public works. To receive the accreditation award, agencies need to meet or exceed standards of performance in several areas including water, sewage, building, storm and water drainage, streets, lighting, sanitation and recycling, parks and transportation, engineering, traffic safety and environmental services.

“All areas of the public works department were inspected,” Bruey said. “The city was fully compliant and exceeded the requirements. In fact, South Jordan’s model ordinances and model processes are going to be used as a standard for APWA.”

“This is a remarkable award,” Mayor Scott Osborne said. He thanked Kalynchuck for traveling to South Jordan and presenting this award.
