The city of Riverton would like its residents to cut back on their water usage according to a press release issued by the city on Wednesday.

"Due to increasing drought conditions and excessive water use, Riverton City is asking residents and businesses alike to cut their culinary and secondary water use by 25%," read the press release. 

“We realize this may be an inconvenience for some people, but the conditions are such that we are going to have a real problem if we don’t immediately begin to reduce our water use,” said Riverton City Manager Konrad Hildebrandt. 

Unlike most cities, Riverton households pay a flat monthly fee for their water. This, according to the press release, is "the likely cause of excessive consumption."

Scott Hill, the city's water director said that people need to be more open to the idea of not having perfectly green lawns during the hot summer months.

“We know people want to keep their lawns green this time of year, but the fact is, if a lawn is totally green right now, it is being over-watered. Brown spots are going to show up and we all need to get comfortable with that," he said.

The city is leading the charge in reducing water usage, having already reduced the watering rate on city-owned green space by 25%.
